Unlike other engines where the A/C compressor is moved to tension the drive belt, the A/C compressor on the S38B36 and B38 used in the E34 M5 is rigidly mounted. To tension the drive belt you have to “walk” the secondary air injection pump along its tensioning bar. Unfortunately the secondary air pumps are failure prone and are no longer available (we are working on a rebuilding service). To solve this issue for those looking to maintain their A/C system and track their E34 M5 or S38B36 + B38 powered car on those hotter track days we have developed this tensioner assembly.
For those who wish to return their car to an OEM configuration the tensioner installation is a completely reversible bolt-on assembly.
